Compatible Dictation Microphones

WhisperTyping Medical works with the dictation microphones you already own

Most modern dictation software ignores the dedicated dictation microphones that medical professionals already own. Dragon Medical One locks you in. Other vendors push you to buy new hardware. WhisperTyping Medical takes a different approach: native, plug-and-play support for the dictation microphones you already paid for. No drivers, no configuration utilities, no Citrix channels. Plug it in, press the Record button, and start dictating.

Supported Dictation Microphones

WhisperTyping Medical currently supports the following dedicated dictation microphones natively. Press the Record button on the device, and WhisperTyping starts a dictation, switches the audio input to the device's built-in microphone, and inserts the transcribed text into whatever Windows application you're using.

How Compatibility Works

For each supported device, WhisperTyping Medical:

Why This Matters

A Nuance PowerMic 4 costs around $400. A Philips SpeechMike Premium Touch costs around $500. If you're a healthcare professional moving away from Dragon Medical One because of pricing, stagnation, or both, the last thing you want to hear is that you also need to buy a new microphone. WhisperTyping Medical exists to make that conversation unnecessary. The dictation microphone you already own is more than capable. What needs replacing is the software behind it.

Quick Setup

The setup is the same for every supported device:

  1. Plug the dictation microphone into a USB port on your Windows PC.
  2. Open WhisperTyping and go to Settings → Hotkeys.
  3. Expand the More hotkey options section.
  4. Tick Enable dictation microphone support in the Dictation microphone section (BETA).
  5. The status label changes to Connected: [device name] when the device is recognised.

Press the Record button on your device, dictate, release. The transcribed text appears in the field you were typing in.

Don't See Your Device?

We add hardware support based on real user demand. If you own a dictation microphone that isn't in the list above (PowerMic III, Philips foot control, Olympus, Grundig, Olympus DS series, anything else with a Record button), let us know. The fastest path to support is owning the device and being willing to test - we add hardware when we have a real user on the other side.

Hardware vs Software

Modern AI speech recognition doesn't require a special microphone to be accurate. A built-in laptop mic, a basic USB headset, and a $500 Philips SpeechMike all hit similar accuracy levels with WhisperTyping Medical. The reason to use a dedicated dictation microphone is the workflow: a Record button you can press without looking, a microphone built for arm's-length dictation, and a hand-feel that doctors who've been using these devices for years already trust. WhisperTyping Medical preserves all of that, and replaces the software that was holding the hardware back.
