No speech detected
- Check that your microphone is properly connected
- Ensure WhisperTyping has permission to access your microphone in Windows Privacy settings
- Try selecting a different microphone in Settings → Microphone
- Test your microphone in other applications to verify it's working
Transcription is slow
- Check your internet connection - WhisperTyping requires a stable connection
- Close other bandwidth-heavy applications
Poor accuracy
- See our tips for better accuracy
- Add custom vocabulary for names and technical terms in Settings → Vocabulary
- Try speaking more slowly and clearly
- Reduce background noise
- Set up text replacements in Settings → Replacements for common errors
Random text you didn't say
This is a known limitation of the Whisper voice-to-text model. During periods of silence or when the microphone doesn't pick up clear speech, the model may "hallucinate" and produce phrases like "Thank you for watching" or repeat words. A few things help reduce this:
- Use a good quality microphone positioned close to your mouth. See our microphone tips.
- Check your microphone volume isn't too low
- Reduce background noise (TV, music, other voices)
- Avoid long pauses while recording
- The Ultra transcription model (available on Professional and Medical plans) significantly reduces hallucinations.
Wrong language output
This is a known issue with the Whisper model, especially with short audio segments. The model may occasionally output text in a different language than what was spoken. To reduce the chance of this happening:
- Select your specific language instead of using auto-detect. You can set this in the language dropdown.
- Add vocabulary in your preferred output language in Settings.
- Record longer segments, as the model is more accurate with more audio context.
- If it happens, try the retry button (circular arrow on the toolbar) to re-transcribe on a different server.
Beginning of speech cut off
Some sound cards have a slight delay when activating the microphone. If you notice the beginning of your speech being cut off, try:
- Switching to a different microphone or sound card
- Waiting half a second after pressing the hotkey before speaking
Delay when starting recording
Some sound cards add a noticeable delay before recording starts. This is often caused by built-in audio processing such as noise reduction, echo cancellation, or audio enhancements. While these features are useful for calls, they can slow down microphone activation.
- Check your sound card or audio driver settings and disable any audio processing or enhancements
- On some systems, look in the Realtek, Intel, or manufacturer-specific audio control panel
- WhisperTyping works well even with background noise, so disabling noise reduction is fine
- If the delay persists, try using a different microphone (USB microphones often have less processing overhead)
Hotkey not responding
- Check that no other application is using the same hotkey
- Try setting a different hotkey in Settings → Hotkeys
- Fully restart WhisperTyping: right-click the tray icon or toolbar and select Exit, then start the app again
- If that doesn't help, restart your computer
Text appearing in the WhisperTyping window instead of my application
WhisperTyping types into whichever text field currently has focus. If the WhisperTyping window itself has focus (for example, if your last click was on the WhisperTyping window), the text will appear there instead. Simply click on the text field where you want to type before starting dictation. If this happens, you can press Alt+Ctrl+V to paste the last transcription into your target application. Note that certain AI Modes are designed to output their results directly in the WhisperTyping window.
Antivirus flagging WhisperTyping
Some antivirus software may flag WhisperTyping because it uses keyboard simulation to type text. This is a false positive - WhisperTyping is safe to use. You may need to add it to your antivirus whitelist.
Outputs clipboard content instead of transcription
If WhisperTyping types out text that was previously in your clipboard instead of what you actually said, try restarting your computer. The Windows clipboard can get slow over time, and a restart clears this up.
Can WhisperTyping run locally?
It is possible to run WhisperTyping with a local transcription server, but this is not feasible for most users. It requires significant setup, powerful server hardware, and usually cooperation with your IT department. We offer this as a consulting service. Please contact us if you're interested.
